iTunes Streaming Service Debut?

August 24, 2011

Apple is now allowing the streaming of an entire album on iTunes. Users can listen to the complete I’m With You album by the Red Hot Chili Peppers. This, along with the TV episode streaming on the Apple TV, may be the first true evidence of an iTunes streaming service on the horizon.

In the coming months, Apple will be releasing iOS 5 and the iCloud service. The iCloud service offers re-downloading of any purchased content to your computers, iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches but does not offer streaming the content…yet. I have a feeling Apple will be announcing new information during their fall music/iPhone event that will slightly change what we know about iCloud and the Itunes in the Cloud service. What we may see is a true streaming service like what Lala offered before they were purchased by Apple in December of 2009. Apple has already said that anything you have purchased through Apple will be available for re-download and anything you have in your iTunes Library that was not purchased will either be matched by Apple or can be uploaded to their iTunes in the Cloud service. One step further would be to stream the same offerings rather than offer download only.

Apple needs to be competitive with a streaming offering with competitors like Spotify and Mog taking users away from the static iTunes service.
