And Then There Were Fewer, RIP WebOS

August 19, 2011

HP announced today that they are going to discontinue the WebOS based Pre phones and TouchPad tablets. This comes just three months after HP’s Eric Cador said that “In the tablet world, we’re going to become better than number one. We call it number one plus.”

When Palm released the first phones with WebOS, it was widely acclaimed as a great operating system but the hardware was not up to par causing slow response and sluggish behavior. HP bought Palm last year for $1.2 billion and had major plans for the failing company but low sales and platform adoption forced HP to re-evaluate its priorities and decided to cut the WebOS hardware.

Also, there is news that HP may be unloading their personal computers as well because of competition from the emerging tablet market that HP just could not penetrate.
