Will Ripping CDs and DVDs Become Legal in the UK?

August 3, 2011

A report on Reuters claims that based on a review of Britain’s intellectual property laws by Professor Ian Hargreaves that it will be recommended that people be allowed to copy content they own onto devices they own for consumption.

the government will agree to Hargreaves’ recommendation to legalize private copying or “format shifting” of legitimately-purchased copyright works, the source said.

What this means is that if you have a DVD of a movie that you want to watch on your portable device (like an iPad, iPhone, iPod or Android device), you would be allowed to rip and convert the movie for personal use. If this passes than it would create a precedent that would hopefully carry over to the US.

Currently, in the US, it is illegal to rip a DVD movie and convert it to another format because DVDs are in an encrypted format. You first have to break the encryption to rip the DVD.
